The Countdown Clock Says Two Days

Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 11:12 AM EST [Fantasy Football, NFL, Owens, ]

It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks with trips, meetings and mounds of fantasy updates at every turn. We produced our first episode of the http://msn.foxsports.com/fantasy"> FOX Fantasy FIX , which will serve as a weekly discussion of the top fantasy football issues to supplement our articles.

I also attended the Fantasy Sports Trade Association conference in Las Vegas which was chock full of information of new products and services in fantasyland and a great spot to chat up our predictions for the year ahead.

Of course, virtually everyone at the conference was still tapped into the fantasy realm via their mobile devices and laptops, trying to find the latest nugget of truth in between seminars and radio phone-ins.

Cut-down day occurred this weekend, taking with it several players who were covered extensively as potential sleepers in the May post-draft discussions. Over the past several months, we'd watched as Ron Dayne lost his grasp on the starting role in Denver. His release signaled that owners longing for a piece of the Denver real estate could snag Cedric Cobbs as a late gamble. Dayne re-emerged in Houston with former Denver coordinator Gary Kubiak. Though Wali Lundy and Vernand Morency are on the roster, Dayne remains intriguing as a late-round selection or one for the watch list if either of the young backs struggle.

We saw second-half star Zach Hilton jettisoned from New Orleans. He moves to the Jets, who had previously traded away Doug Jolley. Hilton will challenge Chris Baker for looks off the arm of Chad Pennington.

Darius Watts thought he'd become the third receiver in Denver with the deal that sent Ashley Lelie to Atlanta. Instead, he's in the same boat as Charles Rogers, the former No. 2 overall pick released by Detroit. Both players are expected to get a long look from the Chicago Bears.

Owen Daniels, a fourth-round pick from Wisconsin, won the battle over Jeb Putzier for the starting tight end job in Houston. Daniels caught one ball for 12 yards in the exhibition finale.

The addition of Doug Gabriel from Oakland will help brace the Patriots for the hole to be left in the lineup by the absence of Deion Branch. He's got big playmaking ability and showed dedication to the cause by hitting the redeye. Gabriel ascends to the top slot in this attack.

Mike Vanderjagt might be sidelined for the first week of the season. Owners will need to play the waiting game, but Shaun Suisham might win the waiver wire pickup of the week award if Vanderjagt is declared inactive.

Lee Suggs finally got out of Cleveland by joining the Dolphins. Assuming he learns the system quickly, he'll be the primary backup to Ronnie Brown. In that offense, Suggs sees his value rise immediately.

And, of course, there are two superstars to watch. The emergency appendectomy surgery will sideline Ben Roethlisberger for one week at a minimum, putting Charlie Batch into the starting role. I suspect that Batch's insertion in the lineup means bigger workloads for Willie Parker and Heath Miller.

From the latest reports, Terrell Owens will be ready to roll in the opener. I had no doubts because the bright lights are on.

I'll be back with more spin as the wires go into overtime.
