Patience Is A Virtue Often Unknown To Fantasy Owners

Monday, April 9, 2007, 05:32 PM EST [Fantasy Baseball, MLB, Ryan Ho]

We live in a world where things are available to us instantly. We applaud the inventions of "On-Demand" programming, the MLB Game Mix (a screen that is the equivalent of owning a dozen televisions) and live on Starbucks drive-thru and fast food.

Shouldn't we want and expect the same from our fantasy heroes? At least that's what the add/drop logs and trading post suggest right now. I'm seeing countless emails with trades involving Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Howard and a host of top-round picks. Owners are adding and dropping like the stock market.

    Patience.

The first week saw cold weather impact a number of games (not just in Cleveland). Runs and home runs are down, and the composite MLB ERA was at 3.72, the lowest point in 15 years!

It's a long, long season. The Sorianos and Howards of the world are going to hit. It may take some time, but Alex Gordon will figure it out (1-for-19).

Put in a bid for Dan Wheeler. Just don't drop Brad Lidge just yet (this happened last season).

If you have Victor Martinez or Ramon Hernandez, go find a replacement catcher (Ronny Paulino, A.J. Pierzynski, Russell Martin)

If you feel the need to juggle pitchers, take a shot on Kip Wells, Micah Owings or Livan Hernandez.

Just don't panic and make a move you'll regret. More times than not, players will revert to form.

Juan Pierre will eventually begin to hit in line with his .300 career batting average.

Mike Mussina will not walk a handful of hitters in his next start.

By the same token, Daniel Cabrera will not likely pitch into the eighth without walking a hitter like he did on Monday.

Be vigilant. Be active and aware. Just don't be over-react to an early cold snap.

Spring is around the corner in those cities, too.
