The ballots are in. With a monster surge down the stretch, Barry Bonds claimed a place in the starting outfield alongside Ken Griffey, Jr. That's an unbelievable total of 1,335 home runs between these second-generation stars alone!
After scrolling through the numbers and having a number of internal debates (I will eventually tape one of those so you can see the two sides of my brain battle it out), I have decided upon my Fantasy All-Star squad. In a number of cases, I've pulled a player from deep down the depth chart. After all, where's the fun in giving the nod to the guys we expected to dominate from day one?
By the same token, there were a few instances where the complete obliteration of the competition warranted a nod here. I mean, with all of the injuries and inconsistency at third base, how do you look away from A-Rod?
Without further ado, I present my squad (through games of July 1st).
C - Russell Martin, LAD: 5-tool game from the catcher's slot. He's just one home run from tying his 2006 mark and has already established a new career mark for stolen bases.
1B - Dmitri Young, WAS: From no man's land to All-Star. He's roping at a .340 clip with 28 EBH and 37 RBI
2B - Brian Roberts, BAL: One of few steady hands in BAL, Roberts has piled up 25 stolen bases and a huge .327 batting average. Happily for fantasy owners, he's also turning on the power of late.
3B - Alex Rodriguez, NYY: What can you say? 28 HR, 79 RBI, 9 steals and .327 batting average.
SS - Jimmy Rollins, PHI: He's posting strong 5-tool marks in a potent Philly offense. More to come in the second half.
OF - Torii Hunter, MIN: Dominant first half, even with Mauer and Morneau hurt for much of it.
OF - Eric Byrnes, ARI: Fan favorite is now a fantasy hero. Byrnes has been a 5-tool stud this season, already producing 13 HR and 15 SB with a strong .315 batting average.
OF - Magglio Ordonez, DET: We'd like to see more power, but how do you argue with 68 RBI and a robust .369 batting average. Ordonez is healthy and clubbing alongside Gary Sheffield.
SP - Brad Penny, LAD: Penny enters July with a record of 10-1 with a miniscule 2.00 ERA and strong 1.12 WHIP.
SP - Dan Haren, OAK: Oakland has had issues in the bullpen and, at times, at the plate. But Haren rolls on. He owns a stellar 10-2 mark with a 2.20 ERA and unworldly 0.98 WHIP. He's taking full advantage by striking out 3.16 hitters per walk allowed.
SP - John Maine, NYM: Maine started the season struggling with his control, but that's all history. Maine has walked only four hitters in his past six starts. He's produced a stellar 9-4 record and 2.74 ERA.
RP - J.J. Putz, SEA: He's been on fire of late. Putz now has 23 saves with a tiny 0.92 ERA.
RP - Takashi Saito, LAD: The Dodgers needed him back in the mix, as Broxton struggled when he we down. He's been virtually unhittable, pitching to a miniscule 1.34 ERA on the strength of 1.25 strikeouts per inning pitched.

That's my squad. There are certainly a mountain of worthy candidates, with Ichiro, Chase Utley, C.C. Sabathia just three that roll off of my tongue.
