Playoffs, Baseball, and the NFL Draft

Thursday, May 4, 2006, 11:27 AM EST [Baseball, Football, Basketball]

To say that it's been an action-packed week would be an understatement. The NBA and NHL Playoffs are back in a big way, capturing their fair share of headlines

Perennial Cup contender Detroit was sent packing in the first round after another dominant regular season. Watch them this off-season, as you're likely to see them reloading with money to spend.

LeBron James hit the game-winner on Wednesday against the Wizards. Did he walk? Maybe ... maybe not. But in the end, it didn't matter. Either way, James vs. Gilbert Arenas has been one of the more entertaining scoring fests seen in recent memory. Although it would have been good to see someone play defense in that game.

And you can't call the Raja Bell play defense. I must have watched that 100 times, and I still can't see how anybody can justify the play. The suspension was justified, regardless of how you feel about Kobe. Take the #8 (or whatever Kobe wears in the future) off his back and make him player X. If it's not a hot button player, everyone agrees on a suspension.

I'm still waiting to find out why Reggie Evans wasn't suspended for his act on Chris Kaman the other day.

Is the way around fines in the NBA regarding officials to quote David Stern? Stern recently estimated that the referees get roughly 5% of calls wrong. He probably shouldn't have quantified it. Think about it. "Coach Jackson, how did you feel about the call they made?" "Well, they got it about 95% right."

That's not going to be good for anybody.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

King Albert is off to another huge campaign. The White Sox are ready to return to the post-season. And, Leo Mazzone is working his magic.

Erik Bedard and Kris Benson both have four victories. Daniel Cabrera has had a couple of outings where he looked like the pitcher everyone expected him to be. The Orioles are an early contender, but they'll need to shake off the early injury to Brian Roberts.

Carlos Zambrano can strike hitters out, but he needs to cut back on the longballs. Cubs fans and fantasy owners are frustrated with the man who would be the Ace.

Bronson Arroyo took the trade to the NL in stride and went to work. He recorded his fifth win earlier in the week for the Major League-leading Cincinnati Reds. Think about it. You get to face pitchers and some lesser-hitting 2B and C in the NL. Would you rather face a pitcher at #9 or Robinson Cano?

I spent last Saturday covering the draft for the site. It was quite a collection of characters in the crowd and made me appreciate the size and scope of the NFL and its fans. There were only six players there, all trotted out on a stage far from fan contact. And still, the place is packed ... and one guy offered me $400. Wow!

I've spent the early part of this week breaking down the wins and losses from the draft and reviewed both the offensive and defensive rookies. Those columns are up on the site now.

Who do you think landed in the best position? Who's the top fantasy rookie of 2006? Is it Bush? Young? Leinart?

    Let's hear it
