The New York Yankees (3-3) had to go all the way to Minnesota to get out of the cold and boy oh boy did they get hot. For once this season they got an early lead and held onto it and wouldn't you know it one of their starters pitched seven, yes you heard it right, seven brilliant innings delivered by Carl Pavano as the Yanks took out the Minnesota Twins in short order 8-2.
The Yanks offense 1-6 absolutely teed off on Twins starter Sidney Ponson and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter set the tone at the top going 5 for 8 with four runs scored. Bobby Abreu and Jorge Posada also continued their hot hitting, with Abreu picking up three hits, four RBI and his first homer of the season.
Alex Rodriguez also continued his torrid streak. The A.L. co-player of the week, who has hit safely in all six games thus far, hit his 5th homer in six games, breaking a Yankee record for the most homers this early to start a season. A-Rod now has 469 career homeruns, just 31 shy of 500.
The biggest pick-me-up of the game was the seven inning brilliance of starter Carl Pavano. Pavano picked up his first win since 5/22/05 against the New York Mets. Andy Pettitte will look to keep the train moving on Tuesday.
