    Okami posts decision over MacDonald

Saturday, October 20, 2007, 07:54 PM EST [General]

    * Yushin Okami (22-4) defeated Jason MacDonald (20-9) via unanimous decision.

This bout was moved off the pay-per-view portion of UFC 77 reportedly because of concerns that Okami's conservative fighting style might not lead to an exciting match. Those fears were justified as Okami slowed the bout's pace to a crawl by consistently tying up MacDonald.

Okami took control midway through the second round and repeatedly pummeled MacDonald from the mount. MacDonald escaped by causing Okami to trip, but was still at a disadvantage until the bell. Okami also controlled the third round, causing MacDonald to pound his hand on the mat in frustration after the fight.

The pay-per-view portion of UFC 77 will begin next.

    * Demian Maia (7-0) defeated Ryan Jensen (11-3) via submission in 2:27 of the first round.

Maia took the fight to the mat early and clearly outclassed Jensen with his jiu-jitsu. Jensen quickly submitted after Maia locked in a rear naked choke.

    Burkman edges Petz

Saturday, October 20, 2007, 07:18 PM EST [General]

    * Josh Burkman (20-4) defeated Forrest Petz (19-5) via split decision.

The third round was likely the deciding factor in this bout. Burkman opened a cut on Petz's forehead early and then floored him with a left hook with roughly 90 seconds remaining. Petz, though, regained his composure and the fight ended with both welterweights standing and throwing pinches. Two judges gave Burkman a 29-28 edge.

Ryan Jensen vs. Demian Maia is next.

    Grice defeats Black -- really

Saturday, October 20, 2007, 06:50 PM EST [General]

    * Matt Grice (10-1) defeated Jason Black (22-4-1) by split decision.

If this first fight is a harbinger of things to come, UFC 77 may be the best MMA pay-per-view show this year. After the majority of the first round was spent on the mat, Grice opened the second round with a flurry of punches that rocked Black and opened a cut under his right eye.

Black regained his bearings by taking the fight to the ground, eventually catching Grice in a triangle choke and kimura while working his way into a dominant position. Grice was saved by the bell while being peppered with blows, although Black almost collapsed while being helped back to his corner.

Black's fatigue showed in the third round as Grice avoided submission attempts and landed far more blows. The bout was originally announced as a draw until Ohio State Athletic Commissioner Bernie Profato entered the Octagon and said there was a mistake with the judging.

"Some people can't count apparently," UFC announcer Joe Rogan told the crowd.

Forrest Petz vs. Josh Burkman is next.
