IMHO: Not a chance. But we were struck by this comment in today's Reuters piece, by Steve James, quoting Julie Foudy on the league's "return:"
"Does she think it odd though that only in North America is the women's game probably more popular than the men's?
'That's the question I always get from English reporters and German reporters...Obviously America loves winners, and we won, so that resonates.'"
Wait: The women's game is more popular than the men's?
Since when? (For those of you out there who think the Continental press is on the ball, this should dissuade you from taking everything without the proverbial grain of salt.)
As for women's soccer and the viability of a league, if you aren't convinced by, oh, the disaster that was WUSA, the lack of attendance at women's national team games, and the absence of media attention, you might want to read Mark Ziegler's excellent piece on the same subject. He's dead on.
