UFC 60]
Let me start off with a quick rant. Whenever I hear about MMA being disscussed in the mainstream news, there's always some jackass reporter refering to it as "ultimate fighting." God I hate that. Listen mainstream news guy, do a little research before you start talking about our sport. Refering to it as "ultimate fighting" just exposes you as a snotty little whiny puke. Moreover, it just makes me want to tune out whatever you say later, cause it's obvious to me already you don't know anything.
Okay, rant over, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Well UFC 60 is only a couple of days away now and damn it I can't wait - May 27th to be exact. I thought I would kick this blog off with some UFC 60 talk!
When I first heard that Royce Gracie was comming back to the Octagon, I knew I had to be there. Regardless of whoever else was fighting, for the fans out there like me: the chance to see the guy who really started the Mixed Martial Arts revolution in the early 90's was just an opportunity I couldn't miss. Make no mistake people, there would be no UFC, Pride, and MMA today if it wasn't for that slender Brazillian fighter taking on all comers in his Gi. After Royce won the first UFC, there was a new mistress in town and her name was Jiu-Jitsu. No more talk about Ninjitsu, Dim Mak, or Tae Kwon Do. All stuff now in retrospect, just seemed downright silly after watching the UFC.
Add to the fact it's in Los Angeles - Southern California - the true Mecca of MMA just makes this event only more special. JOAT was a happy little MMA fanboy content in the knowledge he would get to see Royce fight live.
Okay, it didn't take me too long to come down from that MMA high. Now don't get me wrong, I think Hughes vs Gracie is going to be great. The fact I'll be sitting down live in the Staples Center to watch that one is good enough for me. But after looking over the rest of the card, one can't help to come to the conclusion that some of the undercard fights...well to be honest are less than stunning.
Before I go any farther let us take a gander at the completed UFC 60 card (this card was just finalized YESTERDAY):
The Main Fights:
Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie
Brandon Vera vs. Assuerio Silva
Joe Riggs vs. Mike Swick
Diego Sanchez vs. John Alessio
Alessio Sakara vs. Dean Lister
The Prelim Fights:
Jeremy Horn vs. Chael Sonnen
Melvin Guillard vs. Rick Davis
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Fabiano Scherner
Spencer Fisher vs. Matt Wiman
Now for your average whiny little puke MMA fan who needs a reason to cry about anything, this card is more than enough to start a Bob Sapp sized fit. My first concerns about the UFC 60 began to arise shortly after the announcement of Hughes vs Gracie.
To put it shortly, there really wasn't a whole lot of news about any of the other fights on the card. And usally you know who's fighting who months in advance. Fighters need time to train and prepare, so any competent matchmaker will have his chickens all lined up in a row. UFC 60 up this point, was odd in the sense there really hasn't been a whole lot of news. Furthermore, you had the Heavyweight Championship and the Ortiz/Griffin fights at UFC 59, and injuries to both Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin eliminated any real big name fights besides Hughes vs Gracie.
Oh yeah, did I mention that Hughes vs Gracie wasn't for the belt? Yup, it's an exhibition fight so nothing's on the line. And from what I understand UFC management in all their great wisdom decided to shorten the fight from five rounds to an ordinary three.
So should John Q. Public be wary of throwing down his hardearned cash? Well in the comming few days I'll be braking down the fights, and I'll leave it for you to decide.
