Homestead: The Race for Next Season's Starting Spots

Saturday, November 17, 2007, 07:57 PM EST [Dave Blaney]

The season wraps up tomorrow at Homestead-Miami.  Most will be watching the duel between Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.  However, the more exciting race may be between the two teams near the bottom of the standings racing for a Top 35 position.

Why is it important to finish the season in the top 35?  Because those teams are locked in to the first five races of 2008.  So, this week, Dave Blaney will attempt to finish 34th or better to lock in the #22 Bill Davis Toyota into the Top 35 in owners points.  Meanwhile, Bill Elliott will pilot the #21 Glen Wood Ford, starting 43rd, and attempt to put the #21 into the top 35.

So, while the media drools over the Champion, two veteran drivers will slug it out to see who gets to take a break in the qualifying chase at the beginning of next year.  The "prize" in this case, may determine how the 2008 season goes for these teams.
