In order to create an all-time starting five, once must balance chemistry with great players.
Here's my squad:
PG - Magic Johnson
By my estimation, Magic is the only player who can be mentioned in the same breath as MJ. He took his team to nine NBA Finals and could play any position. Johnson was the greatest leader the game has ever known. He, not Jordan, led the greatest basketball team ever assembled, the Dream Team, and watching him run a fast break was a thing of beauty.
SG - Michael Jordan
Enough said.
SF - Larry Bird
Bird could rebound, pass, and shoot the basketball as well as anyone. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest 3 point shooter of all time.. His only weakness was that he was a sub-par athlete but he more than made up for it with his uncanny basketball sense and the high release on his jumper. Great clutch performer with a competitive mean streak.
PF - Tim Duncan
Bill Russell won 11 rings and was a great defensive stopper and the ultimate champion but he had limited offensive ability. Tim Duncan defends and is the most fundamentally sound post player with an endless offensive repertoire. If he took 28 shots a game he would lead the league in scoring each year. Duncan has won 3 NBA championships and was named 1st team All-NBA and 1st team All NBA Defense his first 8 seasons.
C - Hakeem Olajuwon
The Dream killed Shaq when he was in his prime and if they were both matched up in their respective primes would do so again. Great shot blocker. His low post moves were incredible and watching him "dream shake" opponets was amazing.
This is a team that would play great with one another and each player has the versatility to do it all. They can score, defend, pass, rebound, and they are all winners. Not one player on my team is without multiple championships. I challenge anyone to create a better squad than this.
Current players who could crack this 5:
Kobe Bryant
Lebron James
