A while back I made mention of the horrible head injury Ted Green of the Boston Bruins suffered during a stick-swinging fight in a preseason hockey game in 1968. That got me wondering about what may have been the worst injuries suffered by players during games.
So, in no particular order, here are the ones I came up with: The ten most gruesome in-game injuries from the world of sports.
I'm sure I have missed some, and there might be some that were more dramatic, but I chose these partly because of the people involved and partly because, well, they were the ones I thought of at the time. Feel free to add to the list if you think of one I've missed.
- Monica Seles stabbed in the back by a crazed fan during a tennis match.
On April 30, 1993, the 19 year old tennis star was playing in the quarterfinal round of a tournament in Hamburg, Germany when an unemployed machinist by the name of Gunter Parche reached out from the stands and stabbed her in the back during a changeover.
Parche was reportedly mentally disturbed (Duh!) and obsessed with Seles's rival Steffi Graf. He was later convicted in the attack and given a two-year suspended sentence! Seles was never the same.
- Ted Green gets his skull crushed during a stick-swinging fight in a preseason hockey game.
The Boston Bruins enforcer took on Wayne Maki of the St. Louis Blues in a fight that quickly escalated into a bloody duel with heavy wooden hockey sticks, no helmets, and the predictable result - Green suffered a fractured skull and brain injury, requiring three surgeries to save his life.
Ted Green was out of action for a year and Maki served a 30-day suspension.
- Dale Earnhardt loses his life in a crash at Daytona.

On February 18, 2001, during the last lap of the Daytona 500, Earnhardt hit the wall at 180 mph after being T-boned by a car driven by Ken Schrader. Doctors said Earnhardt in all probablility died instantly.
The crash, which, if you watch it on video seems much less violent than other tumbling end-over-end, bursting into flames wrecks that you see all the time and that drivers often walk away from without a scratch, took the life of one of Nascar's most popular drivers, earning it a spot in the Top Ten.
- Rudy Tomjanovich has his face destroyed in an on-court fight.

On December 9, 1977, during a game between the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers, Tomjanovich was running toward a scuffle between the Lakers' Kermit Washington and the Rockets Kevin Kunnert when Washington unleashed a roundhouse punch, catching Tomjanovich squarely in the head and destroying the posterior portion of his face.
Tomjanovich required five surgeries to reconstruct his face, and Washington was suspended for 25 games and fined $10,000. Tomjanovich was unconscious before hitting the floor and when he came to, he supposedly asked, "What happened? Did the scoreboard fall on me?"
- Dave Dravecky's arm snaps as he delivers a pitch.

On August 15, 1989, five days after courageously returning to pitch for the San Francisco Giants following surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pitching arm, Dravecky delivered a pitch to Tim Raines of the Montreal Expos and his arm shattered. "You could hear the popping noise of my arm breaking all over the stadium. I never felt that kind of pain in my life."
Dravecky's career ended that day and his arm was later amputated after the cancer returned.
- Joe Theismann's leg shatters after a hit by Lawrence Taylor.
On November 18, 1985, on a flea-flicker play where Theismann couldn't find an open receiver, Lawrence taylor's knee landed on Theismann's leg while making a tackle and the leg snapped. "I heard what sounded like a shotgun going off...and felt this excruciating pain. Almost immediately...the endorphins kicked in...and then I was not in pain."
The ghastly break, which saw the tibia snap in half and stick out of Theismann's leg, ended his career.
- John Roseboro clubbed over the head with a bat by Juan Marichal.

On August 22, 1965, during a game at Candlestick Park, Marichal took exception to Dodgers catcher Roseboro twice throwing the ball back to Sandy Koufax just past his face. He turned and clubbed Roseboro over the head with his bat, opening a gash that required fourteen stitches to close and starting a bench-clearing brawl.
Marichal earned an eight-game suspension and was fined $1750.
- Tony Conigliaro hit in the face with a pitch from Jack Hamilton.

On August 18, 1967, a fastball from Angels pitcher Jack Hamilton hit Boston's Conigliaro flush in the face, shattering his cheekbone, dislocating his jaw and damaging the retina in his left eye. On deck hitter Rico Petrocelli was first to get to Conigliaro as he lay at the plate and later said he initially thought Tony C. might have been dead.
He missed the rest of the 1967 season and all of 1968, later returning to hit 36 home runs in 1970 but was never the same.
- Herb Score hit in the face with a line drive.

On May 7, 1957, pitching for the Cleveland Indians against the New York Yankees, Score was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Gil MacDougald, breaking numerous bones in his face. Score missed the rest of the 1957 season and most of 1958, returning late in the year, but was never the same.
After winning 36 games his first two years in the league, Score won only 19 the rest of his career.
- Ray Chapman, hit in the head with a pitch, becomes the only Major League Baseball player to die from injuries sustained during a game.

On August 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was batting against Carl Mays of the New York Giants when he was hit with a pitch, fracturing his skull and putting him into a coma, from which he died twelve hours later.
