Today, I am making my NFL picks for Week 1. I have studied and flip-flopped a lot, but I have finally broken down every game into a winner and a loser. Here we go! NFL Week 1!
Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills: Broncos Super Bowl dreams start here.
Denver has a great defense that can shut down just about anyone. The offense faltered last year, but will make a huge comeback this year. Jay Cutler will upgrade the entire team with a couple of close victories that he will become known for.
Buffalo has been disappointing for as long as I can remember. And, if losing 4 straight Super Bowls is not disappointing to Bills fans, than I don't know what is. But, this year, J.P. Losman should be stepping it up at QB. He is expert John Clayton's pick for breakout star of the year. At first I strongly disagreed, but I slowly started falling into the hype. I think he should be making division champs out of the Bills in 3 years. But this year, the Bills have emptied their roster of all their best players, which is a strange new strategy. Willis McGahee, Takeo Spikes, there are more, but obviously Buffalo's organization is un-organized.
Bottom line: Denver could hold the Bills by the ears and win this game.
Final Score: Denver wins, 31-7
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns: The Rivalry Returns, Tied 55-55!
Pittsburgh has a high powered offense that could score against any defense. The Steelers' defense has some really big playmakers, but has lost star LB Joey Porter. To replace the vacancies at LB, they drafted LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons. These two combined with the already beastly defense of the Steel City will make a huge impact.
Cleveland has, according to my stats, not had a winning season since 1964. That is a horrible run, that will most likely end next year or the year after. But this year they have been plagued with a tough schedule, starting with their rival Steelers. Braylon Edwards should be much better, and not to mention, better behaved. With Frye starting, the Browns will remain unable to beat the Steelers. Since Roethlisberger joined the Steelers, the Browns have been 0-6 vs. their rivals. Soon, the Browns will have a shot at evening up the score.
Bottom line: Cleveland will put a up a good fight, for Cleveland, but Pittsburgh will take all the glory in this one.
Final Score: Steelers win, 24-7
Philadelphia Eagles at Green Bay Packers: GB wins it will set tempo for entire NFC North.
Another blogger said that this looked like the tow worst teams in the NFC going at it. I couldn't disagree more! The Packers will have their final season before Favre departs for the Hall of Fame in Canton.
The offense in Green Bay has unloaded several of their Best players in the past few years. Favre will have an okay game, but will give several balls away to the Eagles. The defense has several beasties, but will not stop the high-powered running and passing attack of the Eagles.
Philadelphia needs to not have so many risky plays this year, whit McNabb as the key. He needs to stay healthy this year, they no longer have Garcia to come in and kick ass for him. They have rookie Kevin Kolb, who looked pretty good against Pittsburgh in the pre-season. He should be a fine sub for McNabb. Westbrook's legs will have another fine season, which will transpire into several key wins on their way to the playoffs.
Bottom line: The Packers have no playmakers big enough to stop the Eagles.
Final: Philly wins, 28-17.
Carolina Panthers at St. Louis Rams: Whoever loses this game will miss the playoffs?!
Carolina's offense has had some very good seasons for its offense in the past 3-4 years. I think that Delhomme will have an extraordinary season, but will come up short in the division to the Saints. DeShaun Foster should be on a lot of your fantasy rosters this year. He will do excellent. Steve Smith will be a good candidate for WR of the year. This entire offense will have a very high-scoring year. The defense has star Julius Peppers sacking each and every QB and he will be the Panthers defensive key to victory this year. If he can, along with the other big playmakers, stay healthy, I don't see this team missing the playoffs.
St. Louis has upgrade their offense probably just as good as the Pats have this off-season. They added WR Dante Hall and TE Randy McMichael, to their already great wideout corps, including Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt. Marc Bulger signed his $65 million contract, and he is gonna work harder than ever to prove that he deserves it. RB Steven Jackson is on my Top 10 MVP Candidates List.
Bottom Line: Carolina's hard hitting defense and quick offense will make for a good game vs. the potent defense and loaded offense of St. Louis.
Final: St. Louis wins, 28-24.
Atlanta Falcons at Minnesota Vikings: Breakout Season for Harrington?
Atlanta really impressed me in the pre-season, and I think that now that Harrington has found the team that he has been able to connect with, he will do much better than anyone is giving him credit for. He is probably one of the most underrated players in the league. Everyone thinks he is bad because he couldn't connect with his team in Detroit or Miami. That will all change, and by season's end, he will be making all the Nay-Sayers regret their words. He has two great wideouts to work with. Joe Horn, acquired from the Saints, and Roddy White, drafted a few years ago. Joey will do great. The defense has some big bruisers that can keep offenses from scoring.
Minnesota has had no success since unloading their best players in the past 3 years. The Vikings will continue having disappointing seasons until they can find the guy that can start winning the close games for the Vikes. The defenses has continued to disappoint all expectations, and the losing won't end this year.
Bottom Line: Atlanta will be division champs next year, but their success starts in Week 1.
Final: Falcons win, 21-3
New England Patriots at New York Jets: Wild Card Re-Match
The Jets lost to their rival New England last year in the playoffs, so you better believe that this is gonna represent getting payback for the Jets. The player who needs to perform this year if they hope to get back to the playoffs is Chad Pennington. The defensive starters are assuring, but could fail to connect under the pressure of the strongest offense in the league.
New England's wideout corps is the absolute strongest in the league, which will transpire into many wins this year, 14 in my opinion. Just when you thought that Tom Brady's days were over, he comes back with stats on paper looking undoubtedly like Super Bowl Champs this year. The uptight defense will stop teams from scoring in high-pressure situations, so we can expect many great things to come for New England.
Bottom Line: New York will be unable to connect on several key plays, costing them the game.
Final: Pats win a close one, 24-22
Miami Dolphins at Washington Redskins: Game of the Losers
Now, the only way you could watch this game is if you are a Die-Hard Washington or Miami fan. This is going to be boring as hell! I cannot even stand to talk about such a boring game.
So, I am just gonna give you the final score and go on to the next game.
Final: Miami wins 17-7.
Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars: Can JAX still survive without Leftwich?
The Titans will do much better when another year has passed, but for this year, another 8-8 or 9-7 season looks probable. And, you know what's bad is that if the Titans don't make the playoffs this year, I think that Fisher will walk away from them.
Jacksonville ahs stunned the nation by releasing Leftwich, which could turn out to be good or bad. We will have to see, huh? Jones-Drew will be sought after in the fantasy leagues after this game, and probably in the NFL when his contract is up. The defense has plenty of gas in the tank to make the playoffs this year, so well just have to see how things turn out then.
Final: Jacksonville wins, 34-17
Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans: Will LJ perform as good as last year?
Kansas City has given LJ his huge contract, which will turn out to give them no success this year. Now that LJ has his contract, he won't have to work as hard, and I don't think he will. He is way overrated going into this year, and will not get to the playoffs, or win the MVP Award, which everyone is saying he will. The defenses has Tamba Hali, which will be a huge breakout star this year, but will miss the playoffs, due to the fact that the offense lost Trent Green to Miami. They have no starting caliber QB, but I think that they will be interested in signing free agent Leftwich.
Houston got the number 1 pick in the draft in 2006, but passed up Reggie Bush for an over-hyped lineman. That is probably the stupidest sports blunder in history. I bet they feel really stupid right now. No big playmakers will give this team a horrible record.
Final: Chiefs win, 10-3
Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders: Another Game of the Losers
I cannot talk about this game.
Final: Oakland wins, 14-7
Chicago Bears at San Diego Chargers: Game of the Week
This game is Game of The Week and I think that if you can watch this game, you should watch it.
San Diego is coming off an incredible season, making the division and getting to the divisional round of the playoffs. LT will have another sensational season alongside QB Philip Rivers. Shawne Merriman and the Bolts' defense will be hardcore contenders for defense of the year.
Chicago lost the Super Bowl last year to the Colts. I do not think that they wee second best in the league, though. Grossman will have another bad season. The entire team will suffer. They won't win a game in the playoffs. The only reason they will win the NFC North is because Green Bay, Detroit, and Minnesota are not gonna challenge them.
Final: San Diego wins, 27-17
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Seattle Seahawks: Game: Weak at Dominance
Tampa Bay will not win a game in 2007. That's right, they will go 0-16 this season. Starting with Seattle, they will have little offensive production against a big defenses from the Emerald City. Plus, if you are playing in Seattle, which is probably the hardest stadium to play in, you are basically guaranteed to add one to the "L" Column.
Seattle is not ready to leave the perch they have on top of the NFC West yet, or at least without a bang. This team looked like they had their last good season in 2006. But, I think that Holmgren has one more chance at it. Personally, I think that Seattle is just a bunch of whiny babies, who will not win it. Shaun Alexander's last great year was in 2005, and he couldn't connect against the Modern Steel Curtain, so this team will overall lose in the playoffs, if they can make it.
Final: Seahawks dominate, 31-7
New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys: Giants must win quickly if they hope to win the East.
Sunday Night Game
New York has a good chance at the playoffs this year, if they can win this game. NY will not have a chance at anything unless they start with a win against Dallas. Strahan is arguably the best Giant in history. He can prove it to me if he makes the playoffs this year. Eli is being held back by Tom Coughlin. Manning will not make the playoffs again until the Giants fire Coughlin.
Tony Romo could win the Super Bowl for the Cowboys before the 49ers or Steelers can win one again. That would mean that they would be first franchise to win six Super Bowls. I think that it would be between the Steelers and Cowboys, but we will just have to see how it goes.
Final: Dallas wins, 31-20
Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals: AFC North winners this week will make playoffs.
Monday Night Game:
Baltimore made the division last year and this year is looking like another one. Cincy and Pitt will be big road stops on the ravens way to the playoffs. I think that the two AFC North teams that win this weekend will be the two teams going to the playoffs.
Pittsburgh won the division 3 years ago, Cincy won the division 2 years ago, and Baltimore won it last year. That proves that this division is the most wide-open in the NFL. This game will be the one to set the tempo in the North. This will be a high-scoring match up.
Cincy has Carson Palmer, who has had an entire year to recover form that huge knee injury in the playoffs in 2006. He has several strong wideouts that will help him get a high rating and should definitely make a huge comeback this year. The only way this team could miss the playoffs is if he aggravates that knee.
Baltimore's defense and offense looked unstoppable last year, and that is a scary thing if you are a Cincy fan. Steve McNair should have no problem getting good rating and being high on the hit list for Cincy, Pitt, and Cleveland. The defense looks better this year, Ray Lewis should be a force for any team to go up against.
Final: Cincinnati wins a nail-biter, 20-13
Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers: Another good Rivalry, too bad I will miss it!
Monday Night Game:
This will be a long season for Arizona fans, who are gonna have to put up with the division clobbering them this year.
San Francisco should have no problem turning the offense and defense of the Cards inside-out. The 49ers may miss the playoffs, but will put up a strong fight. Alex Smith ahs yet to show me that he is a first-rounder. Frank Gore was the NFC's leading rusher last year. He needs a better team if he is going to make the playoffs though.
Arizona has no chance at it this year. That's all I have to say, because I can guarantee you that I'm right. Leinart still needs to be on a better team. I think that they will improve, now that they don't have a hot-tempered pinhead as their coach.
Final: San Fran wins it easily, 20-7
