    PTI, You Must Be Joking.

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 12:49 AM EST [Arizona Cardinals]

Kerry Collins or Kurt Warner for MVP this year in the National Football League? That was the question recently posed on ESPN's pre-Sports Center show, Pardon the Interruption, or PTI as it is commonly called by the show's fans.

What first appeared as an apparent no-brainer and heavily lop-sided question designed to produce a "no-duh" sort of response, PTI shocked the football world when they snubbed Cardinals quarterback, Kurt Warner in favor of Tennessee Titans quarterback, Kerry Collins.

In the eyes of co-hosts Michael Wilbon and the usually spot-on Rick Reilly who was filling in for regular Tony Kornheiser, it was lop-sided in favor of Collins despite him being a player most would maintain had no serious business even being nominated as a candidate.

Yes, I understand that the Titans are still undefeated through 9 games, but let's not kid ourselves and give Kerry Collins all or even most of the credit for that.

Collins has been labeled a "game manager" by every broadcaster on every network covering the sport of football. Just like during the McCain/Palin tour the past couple of months heading up to the election when you could guarantee one would hear the word "maverick" more than once, you know it's coming every single time the Titans are on TV.

So tell me, when was the last time a "game manager" who has 5 touchdown throws to 3 interceptions through week 10 in the NFL (and 40% of those TD's just came last week), was ever a legit candidate for MVP?

    The answer is never.

Meanwhile, former MVP Kurt Warner put down the clipboard and put the Arizona Cardinals on his veteran shoulders and appears to finally have the Redbirds headed for a divisional championship, while also finally helping a hundred thousand analysts perennial "sleeper pick" for the year come to fruition.

The fact of the matter is a QB who took a down-trodden team to a divisional championship while putting up 2,760 yards and a 19 to 6 TD/INT ratio through 9 games deserves MVP consideration.

A QB who puts up 1,525 yards and a 5 to 3 TD/INT ratio through 9 games needs to turn around and thank his coach, running game, and defense for allowing him to be a part of a successful team and affording him an opportunity to show he can just do enough to help them win.

Atlanta Falcons rookie QB, Matt Ryan deserves more MVP consideration in my mind than Collins. He'll settle for Offensive Rookie of the Year however. Jeff Fisher will take home "Coach of the Year" honors, and Collins will be yet another Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson memory, a QB playing for a team predicated on a strong running game and backed up with a stifling defense.

Frankly, this football fan is utterly disappointed with Reilly on this one. PTI really needs to GAC (get a clue).
