Georges St. Pierre had to pull out of his long-awaited welterweight title match against Matt Hughes at UFC 63 in September in Anaheim. St. Pierre suffered a groin pull in training and simply can't fight on the ground.
The silver lining is that this means the replacement match will be the other weltwerweight title fight fans have been anticipating. Hughes will defend his title against the only man who has defeated him in the past five years, B.J. Penn. In 2004, Penn, previously a lightweight, went up a weight class and defeated Hughes for the title with a first-round tapout. Penn then left the promotion without dropping the title. Penn returned and lost a decision to St. Pierre at UFC 58 in March.
Though not expressly stated, it is expected St. Pierre will still be in line for a title shot when he returns.
