Outtakes from my chat with Pat Miletich:
On how to get into the main Miletich camp in Bettendorf: We reached the point years ago where we had more people who wanted to come train with us than we had room for. But it's gotten even crazier this year the way the sport has taken off. We'll have people call us and say they want to move out to Iowa and train with us. Now we tell anyone who wants to train with us to send their tapes, and send their references so we can do a background check and make sure their are no felonies on their record, and if we like what we see then we'll bring them in for a one-week tryout with no promises.
On how not to get in: One time we had these five gangster types show up basically looking for a fight. We invited them in and we stretched them pretty good and they went on their way. People don't try that too often.
On Spencer Fisher: Oh man, is he an exciting fighter to watch. Did you see his last fight? (The memorable win over Matt Wiman at UFC 60, won with a flying knee to the head). How often do you see a fight end like that? Not often, right? Now how often do you see someone hit a knee like that, and the guy who hits the knee tells the ref he needs to check on the guy before his opponent even hits the ground? Spencer is going to be something special.
