    NASCAR Question...

Tuesday, February 19, 2008, 10:14 PM EST [NASCAR]

    Hi all!

I posted the following comment on frevr3fan's blog a couple of days ago on the Daytona 500. I was late reading the article and commenting. That probably explains the lack of an answer, but the question still remains...

Tony Stewart's car (20) heads up towards the wall in turn 4 after bumping with Kurt Busch (2) and Kyle Busch (5) dives low to avoid the wreck in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach on Sunday, February 18, 2007. Stewart was running in first place when the accident happened.

    Here is the comment:

    frevr3fan,

I'm an outsider looking in... in your opening paragraph you asked "What exactly is it that was so bad about the race?"

Is NASCAR racing really that dangerous these days? With all the safety features that have evolved over the years, do you really think it's necessary to run the super tracks with restrictor plates? I'd really like to see these guys turned loose! I guess that even with the heavy emphasis on safety the super tracks minus restrictors would result in horrible wrecks and possibly fatalities? Just curious...

I'm sure I know the answer... Even today the capabilities of these cars can't be unleashed on the super tracks because of the safety issues... Is 230 MPH really that much more dangerous than 185 MPH?
