    Bill Hall

Just made a nice play on a would've-been gapper to right center. He's transitioning to center this season, so a learning curve is likely. On the play in question, he didn't quite take a perfectly direct route to the ball, but his jump was almost instantaneous. It's one play, sure, but the quick instincts bode well for the future.

    Pavano

So he blew up in the fifth. His line for the day: 4.1 innings, 6 hits, 5 runs. Not what the Yankees need. With Chien-ming Wang and Jeffrey Karstens on the DL and Andy Pettitte still a bit gimpy, they need Pavano to pitch well in the early going. That didn't happen today.

In praise of two Ohio players

Grady Sizemore for the Indians homered in the first. If the Indians win the Central, as I think they will, then Sizemore might wind up as your AL MVP. He's an exceptional defender in center, he steals bases and he's got exceptional raw power (92 extra-base hits last season--the fourth-most ever by a center fielder). Among position players age 25 or younger, he's maybe outdone by only Miguel Cabrera. Maybe.

Aaron Harang of the Reds is currently blanking the Cubs. He may be the most underrated pitcher in the game. Last season, Harang led the NL in strikeouts, and he posted a 3.76 ERA despite making half his starts in one of the best hitter's parks around. (In a related matter, he posted a 2.98 road ERA last season.)

    Sure enough ...

The Tigers reached Halladay for two runs in the fifth, and now the score's tied. Given the way Bonderman's settled down, it's advantage Detroit.

    The next inning ...

Monday, April 2, 2007, 12:26 PM EST [General]

... Will be key for the Tigers. Halladay's actual hittable the third time through the order, so if they're going to make a charge the bottom of the fifth will be the time to do it.

Bonderman, meanwhile, has settled down nicely. Since getting touched for three in the first, he's recorded three straight 1-2-3 innings.
