This is what it's come to.
While I should start start by saying that Trevor Immelman won The Masters this past weekend, I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that the story was the fact that Tiger Woods didn't win.
Again, this is what it's come to.
Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time. I know that he hasn't caught the Golden Bear...yet. Still, he's already won PGA player of the year nine times (a record). He's the youngest and fastest to 50 wins and honestly we could go on about the milestones and achievements he's accomplished already...but why?
There are a few die hards who want to wait until Tiger wins major #19 to anoint him greatest of all time, but those are the same people who either don't want to let go of the past or are afraid of collards greens and fried chicken being on the menu at the Champions Dinner.
That rationale is suspect. While the Rolling Stones have sold infinitely more records than Elvis Presley, is indeed Elvis who is still considered the King of Rock & Roll. Ditto for Tupac Shakur who still tops most critics best rappers of all time list despite his short lived career.
The fact that Tiger is so far ahead of the golfing world past and present is evidenced by the fact that most people won't even bother to tune in for the remainder of the PGA season, regardless of whether or not Tiger is playing and in contention on Sunday.
MLB better take advantage of the opportunity to get a larger viewing audience this summer, because nobody will be watching golf.
The only thing we had to look forward to this season was whether or not Tiger was going to win all four Majors. Now thanks to Immelman and Tiger's sputtering short game, there's nothing to look forward to at all.
So what if he wins the remaining three, he's already held all four titles at the same time, albeit not in the same calendar year. He's already demolished any and all competitors who were at some point and time anointed as the challenger to his throne. Mickelson, Garcia, Els, Singh, Duval were all players that some point were being used promote tournaments as rivals (lol) to Tiger.
Yeah right.
I think Tiger himself knows that he has to continue to challenge himself with as many lofty ambitions as possible for no other reason than the fact that there are no players on the tour that can consistently stay with him on the course. Sure Tiger will lose some tournaments, but the fact of the matter is that most players would give their right arm for a second place finish at The Masters. For Tiger it was let down of monumental proportions.
He challenged himself by declaring on his website that he was going for the Grand Slam. For most players that would be a laughable assertion, worthy of a skit on SNL or Dave Letterman. When Tiger said it, however, many of us thought he might actually be able to pull it off. In fact, based on the way he started the season, we expected him to.
That's when you know that your competition is like the j.v. squad compared to the varsity. In any other sport such a declaration would've been met with a tirade of negative reactions from the other players competing. Instead Mickelson (5th), Singh (14th), Garcia (46th), Els (46th), Duval (soon to be appearing on the next reality television show of washed up celebrities) and even the self proclaimed Tiger catcher from last season Bubba Watson (20th), all did exactly what Tiger expected them to do, fold like origami.
So as the season progresses, Tiger will indeed win more tournaments than any else this year. He will make more money than any else this year. He will win at least one major this year and when it's all said and done he'll finish #1 this year...again.
But now we all have to wait for the start of next season to find anything new and exciting about golf. Hopefully he'll declare at the start of the season that he plans on going undefeated for an entire season. Then we'll have a reason to tune in.
For now, we can just enjoy the remaining 150 regular season games of professional baseball. (yawn)
