    Will Hicks Ever Learn

Tuesday, December 27, 2005, 10:19 AM EST [MLB]

The pitcher was coming off a very good season, low ERA, lots of innings pitched, lots of strike outs and very few walks.  Scouts around the league all said the same thing, "Be careful, he was good in a contract year, but he's an injury waiting to happen."  His agent, Scott Boras convinced Hicks and the Rangers to invest 5 years in him anyway.  Am I talking about the recently signed Kevin Millwood?  Nope.  The pitcher I'm talking about is Chan Ho Park.

On the heels of the Alex Rodriguez signing, Hicks signed Park, a Boras client to a 5 year deal paying him a little more than 11 mil per year.  Park was never healthy and even when he did suit up, he was brutal.  Finally the Rangers were able to unload the last half of the last year of his contract to the Padres for Phil Nevin this past year.  What does Hicks do?  He replaces him with Millwood.  Those who do not learn from history are doomed to relive it and Hicks appears to be doing just that by giving Kevin Millwood a 5 year 60 million dollar deal (the 5th year at 12 million is voidable if Millwood is hurt for a certain period of time)

The only thing about this deal that shocks me is that Boras hasn't been able to get Hicks to sign Darren Driefort yet too.
