    Claudio Reyna article

Saturday, June 10, 2006, 11:12 PM EST [Claudio Reyna]

Many Scottish newspapers continue to follow Claudio Reyna's career even though he left Rangers a few years ago. Here's one that appeared in the Scottish Sunday Herald by Philip Dorward.

    Day 2 thoughts

Saturday, June 10, 2006, 10:39 PM EST [Carlos Gamarra]

It was a bad day for....

Paraguay's captain Carlos Gamarra put through his own goal with the game just underway and it turned out to be the only goal England needed.

English fans who expected a win and an entertaining performance. (Historical note - when England won the World Cup in 1966 Alf Ramsay was absolutely slaughtered for England's performance in the their first game a 0-0 draw with Uruguay).

Anyone Swedish and in particular Lars Lagerback the Swedish coach. Lagerback makes Sven look like a maverick.

It was a good day for....

English fans who were happy just to win and to start the World Cup on the right foot.

All of Trinidad and Tobago who pulled off a stunning draw against Sweden despite playing almost all of the second half with 10 men after left back Avery John collected a second yellow card.

Leo Beenhakker the T&T coach who reacted to John sending off by pulling off an attacking player (Collin Samuel) and replacing him with Cornell Glen, another attacker. Glen then proceeded to rattle the crossbar and almost win the game.

Juan Roman Riquelme who set up both Argentine goals in their win over the Ivory Coast.

And the most overstated fact of the day...

Trinidad and Tobago is the smallest country ever to reach the World Cup.

Argentina are running this one down...or are they

Saturday, June 10, 2006, 02:57 PM EST [General]

Less than 10 minutes to go and suddenly the Ivory Coast is back in this. Drogba gets the goal after an extended spell when Argentina looked so comfortable and crusing to a win.

Three minutes later and it looks like Maxi has sealed this one for Argentina but the assistant referee gets it right and it is chalked off for offside. The original shot was from that man Riquelme again.

Into injury time and Ivory Coast need to get the ball. But  they can't and the final whistle is blown.

Ivory Coast gave Argentina some problems but not enough to get a share of the points. If we didn't know it before the World Cup we know it now - how goes Juan Roman Riquelme, goes Argentina.

Man of the Match - Riquelme.

Can the Ivory Coast make something of this...

Saturday, June 10, 2006, 02:16 PM EST [Gabriel Heinze]

Heinze against Drogba is a great battle. Heinze the arch-typical hard as nails Argentine defender and he just put the boots to Drogba - and earned a yellow card for his trouble.

So close to a third for Argentina from another great free kick curled in right footed from the left side by that man Riquelme. Dindane on for Kalou.

Argentina vs. Ivory Coast - HT

Saturday, June 10, 2006, 02:01 PM EST [Ivory Coast]

The half time whistle goes and the Ivory Coast is wondering how they are 2-0 down. One word - Riquelme. He set up the first with a free kick that was not dissimilar to Beckham's effort earlier in the day. The second wass a delightful pass to Saviola who timed his run perfectly after Crespo created space for the pass.

The Ivorians will be wondering about their positioning on the first free kick while there wasn't any pressure put on Riquelme when he had time to thread the needle on Saviola's goal.

The Argentine defense has looked uncomfortable for most of the half with the Ivory Coast's power and speed but they their goal has survived intact.

If Argentine get the next goal then it is all over - it might be already - but if the Africans can get one back then who knows what might be in store.
