Should Tiger play in season opener?

Friday, December 29, 2006, 12:37 PM EST [Golf]

A new year beckons ... and so does the same old problem for the PGA Tour.

Even as the Tour trumpets a "new era in golf" and the debut of the FedExCup competition, it remains at the whim of its superstar players as to which events they choose to grace with their presence.

In this latest example, Tiger Woods has announced that he will skip the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship.

What's your take? Should the PGA Tour's stars be obligated to support the tour's premier events -- like say, the winners-only season opener? Or should the players -- who are basically independent contractors -- have the right to decide when they want to play, where they want to play and how often they want to play without worrying about backlash from the Tour or the fans?
