The Day I Met Mario Lemieux

Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 02:17 PM EST [NHL, Mario Lemiuex, hockey, Pe]

Racing through the corridors of the United Center, a 5 year old boy with a jersey hanging down to the floor pinched Mr. Lemieux's pants.  His father asked Mr. Lemieux for a photograph and he clearly obliged.  It was a cell phone photo, nothing special, just a snapshot you would take in a hurry.  But at the end, the snapshot meant the world for the little hockey fan smiling excitedly.  The photo was a present, a memoir of the legacy of the man who is Mario Lemieux.

After seventeen years, Mario Lemiuex calls his career off.  It was definitely a tough skate battling with lymphoma, back pain and losses for Mario who spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  ''The time is right because I can no longer play the game at the level I'm accustomed to,'' a sullen Lemieux said during his retirement speech.  Mario is a champion who knows how to succeed.  Now his biggest challenge is tending to the Pens possible sale and the prospects of acquiring a new arena.  It might just happen for the future stronghold of the likes of Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andr

    Following the Blackhawks

Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 09:18 AM EST [NHL, Blackhawks, hockey, Chica]

Being a woman sports writer is a hard job, especially when you have to deal with gritty hockey players.  Writing for the Blackhawks is a harder job especially when you seriously want the team to turn around and win.

The team definitely has the ammunition to succeed with Nikolai Khabibulin, Tyler Arnason, and Mark Bell.  But the story written is different;  the team is desperate.

Take Bob Foltman's story today in the Chicago Tribune, titled The Young and the Restless.  I agree with Bob.   It seems that life is a soap opera for the struggling Blackhawks.

But like everyone out there who watches soaps I expect more intrigue, excitment and maybe some story twists in the way.  The Blackhawks show none.  It is the same old storyline.  The record speaks for itself:  49-16-27.

Tonight I watched Bob Foltman on Comcast Sportsnet.  His reaction was that of the typical fan.  For how long?  The Hawks haven't made a strong playoff appearance since 1995.

The Blackhawks face Calgary this Thursday.  Will they be able to beat Iginla?  Will Tyler Arnason be traded?   These and other unanswered questions in the next episode of the Blackhawk saga.

Keep tuned.  I'll be there watching practice on Friday.
