For the Record, Douglass will be Keeping an Eye on Vick

Friday, December 8, 2006, 10:33 AM EST [Bobby Douglass]

December 8, 2006 BY ROMAN MODROWSKI Staff Reporter Chicago Sun Times

Bobby Douglass plans to send Michael Vick a note next week, congratulating the Atlanta Falcons star on becoming the NFL's all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks.  But Douglass isn't sure Vick will know who he is.  Bears fans -- mostly 45 and older -- remember Douglass as the biggest, toughest quarterback in franchise history.

The 6-4, 225-pounder, who was drafted out of Kansas in the second round in 1969, rushed for 968 yards on 141 carries (a 6.9 average) in 1972. He also scored eight touchdowns.  That rushing record -- which was set during a 14-game season -- likely will be broken Sunday, when the Falcons visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Vick needs 40 yards to break Douglass' record in the Falcons' 13th game.

''I'm a little surprised it's lasted this long, especially after they switched to a 16-game season [in 1978],'' Douglass said. ''It's always nice to have a record. It's not something at my age [59] I'm worried a great deal about. But I'm certainly happy to have held it for as long as I did.''   Douglass is a fan of Vick and figured he would ultimately break the record.  ''I'd love to call him, but nobody's really contacted me and I doubt he knows who I am. I'll probably send him a note or a letter and ask him to give me an autograph or something.''

Douglass will watch the Falcons-Bucs game because the Bears play Monday night. Douglass, who owns Ten Marketing and Development in Chicago, is a Bears season-ticket holder.

Now we know a little bit more about Bobby Douglass.
